Description

Black Soldier Fly Larvae – Frozen (individually removable) – A high-quality and convenient food source for pets!

Nutrient-rich and sustainable
Black soldier fly larvae are a nutrient-rich and sustainable protein source. They contain high-quality proteins, healthy fats (including omega-3 and omega-6), fiber (chitin), vitamins (especially B vitamins and vitamin A) and minerals like calcium, iron and zinc. They offer a balanced mix of essential nutrients and are a valuable addition to animal nutrition.

Why are black soldier fly larvae sustainable?

The answer lies in the nature of the black soldier fly larvae themselves. These insects are extremely efficient at converting organic matter into protein-rich feed. By using black soldier fly larvae as a food source, we help close cycles and minimize the ecological footprint.

Suitable for which animals?

  • Chickens: chickens, turkeys and pigeons
  • Exotic birds: parrots, budgerigars and canaries
  • Wild birds: blackbirds, thrushes, tits, woodpeckers, sparrows, pigeons and crows
Fish: pond fish: koi, goldfish, perch and other pond fish
  • Reptiles: geckos (e.g. leopard gecko), bearded dragons, chameleons, sand lizards, skinks and monitors
  • Rodents: hamsters, mice and rats
  • Amphibians: frogs, toads and newts
  • Wildlife: hedgehogs, foxes, martens, bats

Thawing the larvae

Gentle thawing: Thaw larvae before feeding in a container at room temperature. This takes about 30–60 minutes depending on quantity. This preserves the nutrients and makes them easier to eat.
Quick thawing – warm water: Place larvae in a sieve and pour warm water over them to thaw faster. Make sure the water is not too hot so the larvae don't cook.

Benefits of frozen insects?

  • Long shelf life & freshness: Freezing preserves the nutrients of the black soldier fly larvae, so they last longer without losing freshness or quality.
  • Preservation of valuable nutrients: Our black soldier fly larvae are carefully bred and frozen at the ideal time to preserve their valuable nutrients such as proteins, healthy fats, vitamins (e.g. B vitamins) and minerals – entirely without the use of preservatives.
  • Easy portioning: Frozen BSF larvae can be easily portioned for precise dosing and minimal waste.

Thawing & feeding recommendation:

  • Thawing the larvae:
    Quick thawing:
Frozen BSFL should be thawed in a container at room temperature before feeding. This usually takes about 30 minutes to an hour depending on the quantity. This preserves the nutrients and makes them easier for the animals to eat.
Warm water: A quick method is to place the frozen larvae in a sieve and pour warm water over them to thaw faster. Make sure the water is not too hot to avoid cooking the larvae.
  • Portion size:
Make sure to only thaw as many larvae as your pet can eat in one meal. Leftover thawed BSFL should not be refrozen, as this affects quality.
  • Hygiene – clean feeding bowls regularly: After feeding BSFL, the feeding bowls should always be thoroughly cleaned to avoid bacteria or mold.
