Description

ABOUT THE PRODUCT:

IMPORTANT NOTE:
Our frozen buffalo worms are in their natural state – they have not been blanched or otherwise pre-treated. After thawing they may darken or change color – just like other natural insects. This is a natural process and not an indication of poor quality.

Nutrient-rich:
Buffalo worms (Alphitobius diaperinus) are protein-rich feeder insects with a balanced protein-to-fat ratio. They provide valuable building blocks for growth, muscle building and metabolism. Their moderate fat content makes them versatile and suitable for both young and adult animals.

Protein content (for comparison):

  • Buffalo worms: approx. 20–22% protein

  • Wax moth larvae: approx. 15–18% protein

  • House crickets: approx. 18–22% protein

  • Mealworms: approx. 20–25% protein

  • Black soldier fly larvae (BSFL): approx. 35–45% protein

Easy to digest:
Compared to mealworms, buffalo worms have a softer body shell that many animals can easily chew and digest – ideal for smaller species, young animals and sensitive eaters.

Attractive taste:
Many animals readily accept buffalo worms. They provide a welcome variety in the feeding plan and are particularly well accepted thanks to their nutrient composition.

BENEFITS OF OUR PRODUCT:

Made in EU / Italy:
Our buffalo worms come from controlled breeding in the EU – for high quality.

Preservative-free:
We completely avoid artificial additives and preservatives so the worms stay naturally fresh.

SUITABLE FOR WHICH ANIMALS?

  • Birds: Chickens, tits, robins, woodpeckers, starlings

  • Reptiles: Geckos, bearded dragons, chameleons, agamas

  • Amphibians: Frogs, salamanders, axolotls

  • Invertebrates: Tarantulas, scorpions

  • Fish: Larger ornamental fish such as cichlids, catfish

  • Small mammals: Hedgehogs, hamsters, mice

BENEFITS OF FROZEN INSECTS:

  • Long shelf life & freshness: Freezing keeps buffalo worms fresh for a long time without losing quality.

  • Preservation of valuable nutrients: The worms are frozen at the ideal time to preserve protein and fat content as much as possible.

  • Easy portioning: Frozen buffalo worms can be easily portioned – for precise dosing and minimal waste.

COMPOSITION (average analysis):

  • Moisture: approx. 60–65%

  • Protein: approx. 20–22%

  • Fat: approx. 13–15%

  • Ash (minerals): approx. 1–2%

  • Crude fiber: approx. 2%

FEEDING RECOMMENDATION:

Thawing the worms:

  • Thaw gently at room temperature (30–60 minutes, depending on quantity).

  • Alternatively rinse briefly with lukewarm water (max. 30–35 °C) – then feed immediately.

  • Do not boil or heat.

Portion size:
Depending on species and size, 2–10 buffalo worms per feeding. Only remove as many as will be fed immediately.

Hygiene:
Clean feeding bowls regularly to avoid bacteria or mold.

STORAGE:
Store in the freezer compartment or freezer. Do not refreeze once thawed.

DELIVERY:
Delivery is with dry ice.

Important notes on handling dry ice:

  • Do not touch! Dry ice is about –78 °C. Direct skin contact can cause severe frostburn. Always use gloves or a cloth.

  • Do not swallow! Dry ice is not food.

  • Ventilate well! Dry ice evaporates into CO₂ gas. In closed rooms this can cause oxygen deficiency.

  • Do not seal airtight! The pressure created can cause containers to burst.

  • Keep away from children! Dry ice is not a toy.

  • Do not throw in the trash! Simply let it evaporate in the air.

  • Do not put in water! The reaction can cause violent gas evolution and splashing.
