Description

Live black soldier fly larvae, individually removable – high quality, practical and sustainable.

The larvae of Hermetia illucens supply high-quality protein, healthy fats including omega-3 and omega-6, fibre, vitamins (especially B vitamins and vitamin A), minerals such as calcium, iron and zinc, and antioxidants. That makes them a varied treat and a valuable addition to the feeding plan.

Important note

Intended as a complementary feed – not as a complete feed.

Which animals is it suitable for?
  • Poultry: chickens, turkeys and pigeons
  • Exotic birds: parrots, budgerigars and canaries
  • Wild birds: blackbirds, thrushes, tits, woodpeckers, sparrows, pigeons and crows
  • Fish: koi, goldfish, perch and other pond fish
  • Reptiles: geckos such as the leopard gecko, bearded dragons, chameleons, sand lizards, skinks and monitor lizards
  • Rodents: hamsters, mice and rats
  • Amphibians: frogs, toads and newts
  • Wildlife: hedgehogs, foxes, martens and bats
Benefits of live insects
  • Encourage natural hunting behaviour: live larvae trigger the prey drive – especially valuable for reptiles and birds.
  • Mental and physical stimulation: hunting live prey trains cognitive skills and motor control and reduces stress.
  • Better hydration: live larvae contain more moisture.
  • Species-appropriate diet: they match the natural food source in the wild.
  • Unprocessed nutrients: protein, fats and vitamins stay in their natural state.
  • Higher acceptance: even fussy animals instinctively prefer live prey.
Feeding recommendation
  • No preparation needed: you can offer the larvae exactly as they are.
  • Watch the reaction: if your animal struggles to catch the larvae, help with smaller portions or a shallower feeding bowl.
  • Remove leftovers: take out any remaining larvae after feeding to avoid hygiene problems and mould.
Storage and care
  • Transfer and let them wake up: move the larvae from the packaging into a larger container and let them wake up at room temperature – this can take up to 12 hours.
  • Ideal temperature: 4–15 °C, ideally in the fridge. Cool temperatures slow their activity down. Never put them in the freezer.
  • Prepupal stage: once the larvae turn brown or black they stop eating – but they are still perfectly good to feed.
  • Pupal stage: stiff prepupae develop into flies. These can be fed too, but are less nutritious, so we recommend feeding at the larval stage.
Shipping & packaging
  • The contents are shipped live.
  • Shipping only Tuesday to Thursday.
Why black soldier fly larvae are sustainable

Black soldier fly larvae are extremely efficient at converting organic matter into protein-rich feed. They grow on minimal resources, are biodegradable and help close material cycles and reduce the ecological footprint of animal nutrition.
