Description

Terfly – flightless house flies as a breeding culture, 0.5 litres.

Terflies (Musca domestica), also known as curly-wing or stub-wing flies, are flightless bred forms of the common house fly. A genetic wing defect means they cannot fly and instead move around the terrarium on foot – a clear advantage at feeding time. The adult flies reach 5–8 mm and have the reddish eyes typical of house flies.

Important note
  • Orders must reach EntoZoo by Monday 7:00 a.m.
  • Shipped on Wednesdays with DHL
  • Intended as a complementary feed – not as a complete feed.
Which animals is it suitable for?
  • Reptiles: small to medium species such as geckos, anoles, chameleons
  • Amphibians: e.g. poison dart frogs
  • Predatory insects: e.g. mantises
  • Occasionally as a change for fish-eating species in the aquarium
Feeding recommendation

You can put the terflies straight from the culture into the terrarium: simply cut a small hole in the fine fabric lid and the flies will crawl out by themselves.

Alternatively, put them into a dusting container and dust them with a vitamin or mineral powder before feeding. That further improves your animals' nutrient intake.

Tip: a small feeding station with a little fruit juice or jelly attracts the terflies and makes it easier to watch the feeding.

Benefits of live terflies
  • Flightless – nothing escapes from the terrarium
  • Actively walking – natural prey presentation that triggers the hunting instinct
  • Easy to handle – no netting, no risk of escape
  • Ideal feed for sensitive juveniles
  • Culture with nutrient substrate and wood wool – ready to hatch
Storage

The storage temperature clearly affects the hatching rate:

  • Warm (approx. 25 °C): fast development, hatching in 4–6 days
  • Cooler, e.g. in the fridge: slower development, longer shelf life
  • Humidity: approx. 69% – do not let it dry out, moisten lightly if needed

A slight, somewhat pungent smell from the culture is normal. A little mould in the substrate is harmless – the maggots mix the material and keep it clean.
