What feathers are really made of

Feathers consist of around 85% keratin — a structural protein the body builds from amino acids. Without enough high-quality protein in the diet, the building blocks for new plumage are simply missing.

That is why, during the moult, the body often prioritises feather formation over other processes such as egg production — a clever mechanism, but an energetically expensive one.

When extra support makes sense

Not every chicken automatically needs more feed during the moult — but certain signs argue for stepping in.
