Jamaican field crickets – calm, substantial live feed with a discreet chirp.
The Jamaican field cricket (Gryllus assimilis), also called the banana cricket, originally comes from the Caribbean, Central America and the south of Florida and Texas. With its caramel-brown colouring and sturdy build it is high-quality live feed – and considerably quieter than many other cricket species.
Available in three sizes: small, medium and adult.

Worth knowing: because of the chitin shell some animals take these crickets more slowly. They are very sensitive to cold.

From the ant-sized micro juvenile to the full-grown adult of up to 30 mm, this cricket covers the whole range.
Feeding recommendation
- Only offer as many crickets as your animals can catch straight away.
- Micro crickets suit small animals, large ones suit sturdy animals.
- Optionally dust with vitamin and mineral powder before feeding.
- Feed with tweezers or release into the terrarium – their slow movements make them easy to catch.
- Supervised feeding is recommended: the shell and strong legs challenge your animals and supply valuable fibre.

Storage and keeping
- Delivery is made in hygienic transport boxes with fresh egg cartons.
- Keep short-term at 18–26 °C, dry and well ventilated.
- For longer keeping use a larger box such as a fauna box, with a lightly dampened cotton pad.
- No open water – the crickets drown in it.
- Change the cotton daily and remove old food remains.
