Banded Crickets – Live Feeder Insect (Banana Cricket, Gryllus assimilis)

Longing for tropical vibes? The banded cricket, also called banana cricket, originates from the Caribbean, Central America and the southern parts of Florida and Texas. With its elegant caramel-brown coloration, robust build and gentle chirp, it brings Caribbean flair to your terrarium – while supplying your animals with high-quality live feed.

Available in three sizes: Small, Medium and Adult, suitable for animals of all sizes and life stages.

Benefits of banded crickets

  • Available in all sizes year-round

  • Excellent nutritional value: proteins, fat, fiber

  • Calm, slow and easy-going – also suitable for less active animals

  • Rarely hide during the day, easy to feed

  • Keep well over long periods

  • Subtle chirp, low aggression

Note: Some animals may accept banded crickets more slowly because of the chitin shell. Very cold-sensitive.

Analytical constituents (average values)

  • Moisture: 70%

  • Crude protein: 19%

  • Crude fat: 7%

  • Crude ash: 1%

Suitable for which animals?

  • Reptiles: Lizards, skinks, iguanas, geckos, chameleons, large monitors

  • Amphibians: Horned frogs, burrowing frogs, tree frogs

  • Birds: Insectivorous ornamental birds, larger bird species

  • Small mammals: Hedgehogs, tenrecs, shrews

  • Invertebrates: Tarantulas, scorpions, assassin bugs

From the tiny micro juvenile (ant-sized) to the fully grown adult (up to 30 mm), the banded cricket covers the entire feed demand spectrum.

Feeding recommendation

  • Only offer as many crickets as your animals can catch immediately

  • Micro banded crickets for small pets, large ones for robust animals

  • Optionally dust with vitamin and mineral powder before feeding

  • Use tweezers or place directly in the terrarium – easy to catch thanks to slow movements

  • Controlled feeding recommended: the shell and strong legs challenge the animals and provide valuable fiber

Benefits of live banded crickets

  • Large, robust feed for adult pets

  • Encourage species-appropriate hunting and prey-catching behavior

  • Even the young crickets are strong enough for smaller animals

  • Slow movements make eating easier for slow or inexperienced pets

  • Subtle chirp – barely audible in adjacent rooms

  • Wide size range for all life stages

Storage notes

  • Delivery in hygienic transport boxes with fresh egg cartons

  • Short-term storage: 18–26 °C, dry, well ventilated

  • For longer accommodation: larger boxes (e.g. Faunabox) with a slightly moistened cotton ball

  • No open water – risk of drowning or wetness in the container

  • Daily change of cotton and removal of old food residues
