Egyptian Migratory Locusts – Live Feeder Insects

The Egyptian Migratory Locust (Locusta migratoria) has been one of the most popular live feeder insects for centuries. With sizes up to 6 cm, these impressive animals are perfect for satisfying even large insectivores. Their lively movement triggers the natural hunting instinct in many reptiles, amphibians, birds and small mammals – a real highlight in the feeding bowl.

Available in different size classes:

  • Small
  • Medium
  • Subadult
  • Large – Adult

Suitable for which animals?
From the small green anole to the large monitor, almost all terrarium animals benefit from these nutrient-rich locusts.

  • Lizards (e.g. water dragons, basilisks, geckos, monitors, skinks)

  • Amphibians (frogs, toads)

  • Insectivorous birds

  • Small mammals (e.g. marmosets, shrews)

  • Insectivorous snakes and turtles

Feeding recommendation

  • Only place as many animals in the terrarium as will be eaten in a short time

  • Larger locusts are ideal for large insectivores, juveniles for smaller species

  • Before feeding we recommend dusting with vitamin and mineral powder

  • Feeding with tweezers or free in the terrarium is possible – the animals don’t hide

Benefits of live locusts

  • Very nutritious and easy to digest

  • Enthusiastically accepted by almost all insectivores

  • Stimulate the hunting instinct through their movement

  • No escape risk and no disturbing chirping

  • Easy to handle, they don’t hide

Storage & keeping

  • Delivery in hygienic transport boxes with egg cartons as shelter

  • For longer storage: move into a larger, well-ventilated container (e.g. Faunabox)

  • Temperature: daytime approx. 25–30 °C, at night not below 20 °C

  • Food: untreated wheat bran, fresh greens (e.g. wheatgrass, dandelion) – free from pesticides and chemicals

  • Avoid moisture at all costs – locusts are very sensitive to wetness

  • Only offer fresh feed from a safe source
