Live and frozen feeder animals travel in completely different ways – different carrier, different dispatch days, different costs. Here are both routes side by side.

  • Temperature protection in the parcel

    In winter we add a heat pack, at higher temperatures a cool pad – so the animals neither chill nor overheat on the way.

  • Dispatch Mon–Wed

    The order deadline is Monday 07:00. Mealworms, soldier flies, wax moths and superworms can be ordered up to Wednesday 10:00.

  • Weather comes before speed

    In extreme temperatures we deliberately postpone dispatch. It matters more to us that the goods actually arrive alive than that they go out quickly.

  • Not to a parcel locker

    We do not ship live goods to parcel locker addresses. They should arrive where you can accept them straight away.

    Frozen goods travel in an insulated polystyrene box with dry ice and go out exclusively via Go! General Overnight.

  • Dispatch Mon–Thu

    Orders placed by 12:00 usually go out the same day. No Saturday delivery.

  • Delivery by 2 p.m.

    On the next working day after dispatch, by 2 p.m. Express refers to the transit time from handover to the carrier – not to the processing time here with us.

  • Accept on the first attempt

    Please make sure the parcel can be accepted on the first delivery attempt – a delayed acceptance can affect the quality of the goods.

Both forms have their place. What suits you depends less on the feeder animal than on your pet and your everyday routine.

Live Insects

The usual choice

For all animals that respond to movement – and when you want to enrich the food specifically.

  • Awakens hunting behaviour

    Moving prey challenges the eyes, reactions and muscles – enrichment that still food cannot offer.

  • Higher food acceptance

    Many reptiles respond to movement, not to smell.

  • Can be enriched specifically

    Only live feeder animals can be fed up beforehand (gut loading) and dusted with calcium.

  • Brings moisture with it

    Live prey consists largely of water – important for species that rarely drink from a bowl.

Things to consider

  • The animals have to be kept until feeding – cool, dry and escape-proof.
  • Live feeder animals do not keep indefinitely – you feed on a weekly rhythm rather than from a store.

If you want to feed to a plan, look after several animals or would rather not keep live insects in the house.

  • Without movement the hunting appeal is missing – some animals refuse still food.
  • Express shipping costs €24.99 and is only free from €450; for single packs that weighs heavily.
  • Freezer space needed.

As a rule of thumb: if you keep a single reptile, live feeder animals are the simplest option. Frozen pays off as soon as you look after several animals or want to buy in bulk – and then the express shipping is easier to justify too.

Which feeder animal size suits my pet?

As a rule of thumb: the feeder animal should be no wider than the distance between your pet's eyes. When in doubt, go one size smaller and feed several animals instead – that is safer and encourages hunting as well.

Do the insects really arrive alive?

We do a great deal to ensure that: every parcel gets a heat pack in winter and a cool pad at higher temperatures. We only dispatch live goods Monday to Wednesday and not to parcel lockers. In extreme temperatures we deliberately postpone dispatch – it matters more to us that the goods arrive alive. If there is a problem with your parcel after all, write to us at info@entozoo.de.

When do I have to order and what does shipping cost?

Live goods ordered by Monday 07:00 go out in the same week – mealworms, soldier flies, wax moths and superworms up to Wednesday 10:00. Shipping by DHL Standard in 1–3 working days for €5.49, free from an order value of €75.

Frozen goods run separately: dispatch Monday to Thursday, orders placed by 12:00 usually go out the same day. They travel in a polystyrene box with dry ice via Go! General Overnight and cost €24.99, free from an order value of €450.

On request you can also collect in person in Bremen (please arrange an appointment in advance).

Do I have to enrich feeder insects before feeding?

For long-term feeding, yes. Feeder animals are usually dusted with calcium and vitamin powder and well fed beforehand (gut loading) – that way the nutrients reach your animal. How much and how often depends on species, age and lighting.

How do I keep live feeder animals until feeding?

Crickets and locusts like it warm, dry and well ventilated – with a little fresh food and places to hide. Mealworms, superworms and wax moth larvae, by contrast, are stored cooler. Do not seal anything airtight, otherwise the animals sweat.

How do I store frozen feeder animals?

Straight into the freezer after delivery – the goods arrive deep-frozen in a polystyrene box with dry ice and should not thaw and be refrozen. For feeding you take out only the portion your animal eats; our frozen goods are individually removable for exactly that reason.

How often should I feed?

That depends heavily on species and age: young animals usually eat daily, fully grown lizards often only two to three times a week. Take your lead from your animal's body condition and feeding behaviour.
